A corrections officer was allegedly stabbed in the head at the California Institute for Men in Chino by a man who was serving a life sentence for a Los Angeles County murder conviction. He was being detained in restricted housing on Monday.
According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, corrections officers observed Kevin G. Roby, 60, exiting his housing unit at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, wearing only his boxer shorts.
According to CDCR, Roby continued to walk toward the prison yard while yelling that he would murder anyone in the yard, despite officers’ orders to stop. Roby subsequently extracted a “inmate-manufactured weapon” from his underwear, which prompted authorities to establish a skirmish line, according to officials.
Roby proceeded toward the skirmish line without any indication or provocation. In a statement, CDCR officials stated that staff promptly responded and employed chemical agents and physical force to restrain him and suppress the attack.
Roby is purportedly responsible for stabbing an officer on the side of his skull during the skirmish. The officer was transported to a hospital for treatment of a laceration and the consequences of being pepper-sprayed. However, he was subsequently released.
According to the CDCR, Roby was assigned restricted housing status and was anticipated to be relocated to a different facility.
Following his conviction in Los Angeles County for first-degree homicide and rape with force or violence, as well as an enhancement for the use of a firearm, Roby was sentenced to prison in August 1988. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
