Sam Rubin had a deep connection with the Boy Scouts of America. He and his son Colby actively participated in the organization, forging strong bonds through countless camping trips and hikes.
Sam was proud of Colby’s journey to becoming an Eagle Scout and served as a dedicated Board Member of the Western Los Angeles County Council, Boy Scouts of America.
The Western Los Angeles County Council of the Boy Scouts of America has established the Sam Rubin Campership as a tribute to Sam’s enduring legacy.
All the funds raised will be used to provide lower-income families with the opportunity to send their scouts to Camp Emerald Bay on Catalina Island, completely free of charge.
Colby shared with KTLA 5’s Dayna Devon that the closest bonds he formed were during his time in scouting. He emphasized the importance of providing others with the same opportunity to develop such strong connections through scouting.
According to Colby, Sam was attracted to Emerald Bay due to his observation of young individuals engaging in learning and personal development.
“He wanted to ensure that more children had access to this opportunity,” he continued. “My father and I spent a significant amount of quality time together, and I truly believe that scouting played a pivotal role in that.”
Unique to Emerald Bay is the Outdoor Academy (EBOA), a youth science education program aimed at inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards. Through overnight science programs that incorporate the values and methods of Scouting, EBOA seeks to instill a passion for the environment in young minds. These programs are conducted in the spring and fall seasons.
Sending a child to camp for a week amounts to approximately $1,000.
Wendy Burch explained that they aim to raise $50,000, which would enable 50 campers to attend the camp in Sam’s honor next year. She emphasized that making a donation is simple, as the funds go directly to the Boy Scouts of America.
