Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón recently had an in-depth conversation with “Inside the Issues” host Amrit Singh. In this interview, Gascón discussed various topics including crime, retail theft, and his upcoming re-election campaign. As he gears up for a second term this November, Gascón shared his insights and plans for the future.
During the interview, Gascón delved into his childhood in Cuba and his early professional journey, highlighting how these experiences influenced his perspective on public safety, criminal justice, and the legal system.
He reflected on his upbringing in a challenging environment, marked by poverty, racism, gangs, and crime. Transitioning from that environment to his position in the LAPD and his current role, each milestone has brought about a significant shift in his perspective and thinking.
Gascón believes that the shift in voters’ views and attitudes toward crime since he took office can be attributed to partisanship and politics.
According to him, although crime rates have decreased overall, there is a significant increase in fear among people. He acknowledges that the current state of hyperpolarization and hyper-politics, especially with the upcoming Presidential election, is contributing to this situation. These factors are not only influencing politics at a national level but are also impacting local politics.
During the conversation, Gascón also shared his thoughts on his opponent, Nathan Hochman, and explained why he believes that Hochman is not the most suitable candidate for the position.
