According to NECN, a national retail theft ring that targeted luxury cosmetic stores has resulted in a California couple being ordered to pay millions in restitution. Kenneth and Michelle Mack, residents of Bonsall, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of grand theft and conspiracy.
The couple admitted to running a scheme involving at least 12 women who shoplifted makeup and other goods from various retailers, including 230 Ulta stores and a LensCrafters in Clairemont. A San Diego County judge sentenced Kenneth Mack to five years and four months in prison, with a plea deal allowing for release after one year followed by probation and community service.
Meanwhile, Michelle Mack’s sentencing will be deferred to allow the couple to care for their minor children. The judge has ordered the Macks and some of their co-conspirators to pay $3 million in restitution to Ulta and $13,000 to Sephora.
In the news, a Florida man has been found guilty of attempting to entice a minor for sex. The consequences for his actions could lead to life imprisonment.
In December 2023, law enforcement officials raided the luxurious Bonsall mansion belonging to the Macks and uncovered over $300,000 worth of stolen makeup and other products. Michelle Mack was accused of masterminding a scheme that involved directing women to shoplift and then reselling the stolen goods through an “Online Makeup Store” on Amazon. The couple’s property, which included a vineyard and chapel, was even used as a wedding venue and Airbnb.
Rob Bonta, the California Attorney General, initially estimated the scheme’s losses at $8 million, but the actual sum is likely to be even higher.
The Macks and their accomplices faced 140 counts, including charges of grand theft, receiving stolen property, conspiracy, and organized retail crime. However, a plea agreement reduced the charges. Law enforcement officials arrested at least nine individuals in connection with the extensive theft ring, underscoring the significant impact of the Macks’ criminal enterprise on retailers throughout the United States.
The Long Beach Police have successfully apprehended an armed suspect who attempted to rob a hostage. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries, and the replica firearm used in the robbery attempt was recovered. This incident highlights the importance of prompt and effective response by law enforcement agencies in such situations.
