Late last week, officials announced that a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy is facing almost four years in prison for allegedly assaulting an inmate at a downtown Los Angeles courthouse over two years ago.
As per the news release from the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office, the occurrence took place on January 20, 2022, at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center.
According to prosecutors, Deputy Maria Torres, who was stationed at the court lock-up, came across a prisoner who refused to exit his cell. The inmate’s uncooperative behavior was the subject of scrutiny.
A public officer has charged a 43-year-old individual with a felony count of assault, and a police officer has charged them with a felony count of filing a false report.
District Attorney Gascón condemned the actions of Deputy Maria Torres, stating that they go against the values and principles of law enforcement and result in a breach of trust within the community. He emphasized that every victim has the right to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of the situation.
If Torres is found guilty, he may face a prison sentence of up to three years and eight months, to be served in local custody.
The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department’s Internal Criminal Investigation Bureau was responsible for handling the investigation into the allegations.
