The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation claims that at around 10:43 on Friday morning, inmates Tyler Ostertag, 29, and Raymond Rojas, 25, attacked Johnny Victor, 66, using a makeshift weapon. Fortunately, the prison staff intervened and stopped the attack, ultimately restraining Rojas and Ostertag.
After sustaining injuries, Victor received medical attention at a prison facility. Unfortunately, he was later declared deceased.
The prison investigators and the Kern County District Attorney’s Office are currently investigating Victor’s death as a homicide.
The official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Kern County Coroner.
Victor had been in prison since 1987, serving a life sentence with the chance of parole for attempting second-degree murder.
In 2022, Rojas was convicted of several charges, such as second-degree robbery, weapons possession, and discharge of a weapon causing great bodily injury or death, resulting in a life sentence with the possibility of parole.
Since 2019, Ostertag has been sentenced to life imprisonment with the chance of parole after being found guilty of second-degree murder.
Delano is the location of Kern Valley State Prison, which is situated about 37 miles north of Bakersfield. The facility, which was constructed in 2005, can accommodate over 3,300 prisoners.
