A man who is currently serving a life prison sentence for a murder conviction in Los Angeles County is currently being held in restricted housing at the California Institute for Men in Chino. This is due to his alleged involvement in the stabbing of a corrections officer in the head.
Corrections officers noticed Kevin G. Roby, a 60-year-old man, as he left his housing unit on Sunday night around 8:30 p.m. wearing nothing but his boxer shorts. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation provided this information.
Officers allegedly ordered Roby to stop, but he disobeyed them and continued toward the prison yard, according to CDCR. In a fit of rage, he shouted threats to kill anyone in the vicinity. Shortly after, Roby produced a weapon that was fabricated by inmates from his boxers, prompting authorities to swiftly form a skirmish line.
According to a statement from CDCR officials, Roby unexpectedly sprinted towards the skirmish line without warning or provocation. The staff promptly reacted by using physical force and chemical agents to subdue him and put an end to the assault.
During the skirmish, Roby reportedly utilized the weapon to stab an officer on the side of his head. Consequently, the officer had to be transported to a hospital due to a laceration and the effects of being pepper-sprayed. Fortunately, he received prompt medical attention and was subsequently discharged.
According to the CDCR, Roby was placed on restricted housing status and was slated for transfer to another prison.
