Alison Chao’s dad charged with child abduction
This Article Includes
The authorities have pressed charges against Jeffrey Chao, the father of Alison Chao, a teenager from Monterey Park who was reported missing earlier this month. He has been charged with felony child abduction and making false statements while filing a missing person’s report.
Jeffery Chao, a man whose 15-year-old daughter went missing almost two weeks ago in Monterey Park, has been accused of felony child stealing/concealment.
The misdemeanor count of false report of an emergency was also filed by the LA County DA’s Office.
District Attorney Gascón stated that falsely reporting a child as missing not only breaks the law but also takes away valuable law enforcement resources from other important matters. He emphasized that this kind of behavior will not be accepted, and those responsible will face the consequences of their actions.
Chao pleaded not guilty and was instructed to surrender all firearms. According to his lawyer, he possesses multiple semi-automatic weapons, but Chao has never been convicted of a crime.
If he is found guilty of the charges, he could face up to 5 years in prison. A GPS tracking system has been placed on him and his bail has been set at $500,000 by the judge.
Alison Chao was found safe in Glendale just three days before the arrest of Chao, who is 40 years old and was taken into custody on July 26.
On July 16, Alison was reported missing when she did not arrive at her relative’s house in San Gabriel after leaving her Monterey Park residence on her bike.
The DA’s Office has reported that on the evening of July 16, Chao is believed to have taken and concealed his daughter, and then reported her missing to law enforcement, falsely.
