Authorities in South Los Angeles are currently investigating a tragic incident where a hit-and-run driver struck and killed a bicyclist in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood. The incident occurred overnight, raising concerns about the safety of cyclists in the area.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers were called to the 7900 block of Alameda Street after receiving reports of a collision involving a BMX bike and a wrong-way driver.
Around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Los Angeles County Fire paramedics declared the victim dead after they had struck him on the sidewalk close to the intersection of Alameda and Nadeau streets.
The driver was traveling in the wrong direction on Alameda Street when their vehicle veered onto the sidewalk and collided with the bicyclist. After the incident, the driver fled the scene, leaving behind a gray and black backpack and the victim’s cell phone, which were discovered near the vibrant green bike.
The intersection of Alameda and Nadeau streets has witnessed a number of hit-and-run accidents in the past few years, leading to severe injuries or even fatalities. Tragically, on the morning of January 25, 2021, an innocent pedestrian lost their life at this intersection due to a hit-and-run driver.
Authorities dedicated several hours early Wednesday morning to conducting a thorough canvassing of the surrounding area in search of potential witnesses and surveillance cameras. Unfortunately, no additional details regarding the suspect’s vehicle have been disclosed at this time.
