A sergeant from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department died late Thursday night in a crash involving only one car. He was not on duty at the time.
The crash took place in Valencia around 11 p.m., near McBean Parkway and Valencia Boulevard, according to the Sheriff’s Department on Friday afternoon.
Officials said that the deputy was Jason Viger, who is a sergeant with the LASD Homicide Bureau.
Not much was known about the crash, but a freelance reporter at the scene said that a man and a lady were involved. The man, who was later named Viger, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crime. The woman, who was not identified, was taken to a nearby hospital to get medical care for her injuries.
There were no other cars involved. Viger, who is 43 years old, has been a deputy sheriff since 2008 and has worked in prisons, drugs, and at the Palmdale and Lancaster stations.
He was very proud to be the first sergeant to join the Sheriff’s Overdose Response Task Force, the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. “Jason was praised by the Department for his work on the Skirball Fire and as a patrol officer who took guns off the streets.”
His parents, four children, and three brothers, one of whom is also a LASD sergeant, are among the people who will miss him.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said, “Sergeant Jason Viger was dedicated and loved his job as a Deputy Sheriff. His untimely death has had a huge effect on our Department.” “The LASD family will miss him a lot, and his unwavering commitment to serving and protecting our community will live on forever.”
The fatal crash is being looked into right now, and it’s not clear if illness played a part in it.
